Why You Should Know The Law or Get a Lawyer: Personal Experience.

What could I have done to abate the heart attack planned against me by the managing director of our company, who was also my principal, if there was nothing called number six within?

Immediately after my secondary school, I worked with a security and Services outlet based in Awka. Our salaries come a week late, and we weren't happy for such because we put our lives on the line, making sure that the hotel is safe.

I gained admission and tendered my resignation letter. My supervisor read my letter and said I wrote like someone who has already graduated from University. He was also happy that a boy he considered and helped despite being under age to work with the company will be moving ahead to pursue something bigger. My MD wasn't happy, I guess.

As I counted on the day, my MD counted on the right to sack me. The onerousness of his plans made my supervisor to remind me of being careful with my duties. What a good man! He didn't tell me why; yet I was a lucky child who read meaning into every action that happens around. Even smiles, meant a lot to me. I knew it was time to show my MD, that small could actually be mighty. I knew I would be sacked before the month and my 20k salary would be by gone but I must throw a fight.

We have seen that happen all the time, and the disengaged officers come every day to shout and go without achieving anything. Every night I romanced my mind on the challenge. How someone would deny me of a month salary after I had suffered under rain and the sun. Our working condition was so strict; 24 hours on duty, 24 hours off duty, and we never used chairs or bed. We stood all day. Once it's your turn to sleep, you go in and sleep on the bare floor. Thirty days, someone would charge you of an offense because you submitted a resignation letter and sack you.

It won't happen so easily, I said to my self-all day. I began to make research online on how to take actions. Most of what I saw was how to head to court and Institute a case. I began to think if it's necessary to meet a lawyer. But it's just #20k. Ok. Finally, I came across this group: the legal aid on Facebook and began to read it's articles. I love law very well, and I read everything I see that featured law. Breaking through the ice, I was added in their social media Groups. They thought I was a lawyer, and in the pool of pretence I never cared to clear the air for them. Whenever they discussed in the group, I quote authorities and shared some court of appeal's law reports there. I never claimed to be one and the group was not just for lawyers only that lawyers dominated it. I asked many questions on how to get an employer pay his employees and what to do when he fails. I asked these questions with a huge big grammar. I had law dictionary on my phone since my Jss 3 and I read Nigerian Constitution also. I even finished it before SS 3 (I read it like a novel and that thing is hard.)
Firstly, I drafted a letter to human resource management. Another was drafted for the management of the Hotel where I represented my security firm as an officer. In my humble immature sense of being, I even drafted a letter to supreme Court and filled each one.

Each morning I went to work with files and when my supervisor asked me what they are for, I would smile and say:

"My uncle is a lawyer. I'm helping him with some necessary arrangements."

No one in our family is a lawyer. In fact, I don't think we have any lawyer in our kindred as at yesterday I checked.

I told my fellow security officer what I would be doing when they serve me sack letter. They laughed at the initial stage.

"You don't know who our devilish MD is. By the time he sacks you, you will understand. Why did you submit a letter? You don't ask questions. You supposed to wait for this month salary before you leave without a notice. They will only seize your one week not one month plus, as it stands now."

I was discouraged. I began to chats some lawyers in the group, and they continued to give me morale. None of them knew I was below an age of 19. They thought I was a lawyer trying to Institute a case for my client. I knew if I told me I was the one, a lot of them might began to suspect me. I did start my chats with "learned counsel.'

"Ben what are you doing with these stamped letters? Even screenshots of lawyers chats?"Joy, a female colleague asked me.

When I noticed my supervisor was paying attention, my voice shot high.

"The moment they serve me a letter, I will sink this firm. I don't talk much. May be God wants to use me to stop some nonsense in this awkward Awka city. After working hard for this company, someone will just wake up and sack me because I gained admission. Okay oh. Check through my phones, go to WhatsApp also. Go and check, they are all lawyers and check our chats. This company will sink."

My supervisor pretended as if he didn't hear us talking. In a normal sense, we were supposed to be surcharged for discussing on duty, but that didn't happen. That gave me a sigh of relief.

One week to the expiration of my resignation letter, I was invited to the headquarters. It was an automatic transfer to another location where I would have no voice or ground. My fear heightened, but I went back to my drawing board and re-strategised. I made it real. When the secretary told me they have orders to serve me a letter, I told him I would send my own letter to human resource management. Making friends with the security officers in my new bit wasn't hard. They would be instrumental to my quite tedious plan. Often I paid for three persons' lunch, and they never knew my real intentions. Before three days, I have soiled their minds.

Like I said earlier, our salaries were delayed by one week. I had to use it to create a case, and it worked. My supervisor was invited by the hotel when they received my letter that we have not been paid despite the fact that our salaries have been released. Two other officers wrote theirs also.

"I will sink this company. They don't know me oh," I continued to boast all day without a clear-cut plan on how to fight if actually they sack me.

It was like a play to me when I received an alert of twenty thousand, two hundred and fifty Naira. I was the only one who received a salary? MD even paid for the two days I have worked into the new month? By 12 am, MD drove down to Awka from Enugu and looked me in the face.

"Who is BENEDICT ONYEKELU OLISA?"

"Good morning sir. I'm Ben..."

"Very nice. You gained admission right? Very wonderful. We received your resignation letter, and it's in the best interest of the company to wish you well by allowing you to go and forward your Education. I accept your letter and this young man beside me will take over from you. Hand him over your security outfits; we accept your resignation."

To God be the glory. Thanks to lawyers. Thanks to Legal Aide. When you have issues, go to lawyers. Some of them later learnt the truth and laughed so much. Didn't I sink the company? Please hail Mr. Ben, the Galadima of Sense and Number six. The golden stool of sense🤣

In this long race Dear, I shall be counting on you for we all know that success is sacrosanct.

  1. This is ambition enlightening writ up I have ever come across.
What a pain pacifying writ up! I tell to like this prosaic work. For it has a lot of oil to lubricate ones dormant celubrum membrane. More cognitive strength to the writer's elbow.
